The National eHealth Innovation Series/New England Summit represents the first in a planned series of regional summits bringing together cutting-edge health care providers and payors with innovative early-stage health care information technology companies to showcase and accelerate eHealth innovation across the nation. The New England Summit will pair an eHealth Innovation Open, which seeks through competition to recognize and award outstanding new health information technology (IT) solutions, with speed-dating sessions matching top innovative health care and solution providers.
Why is innovation and entrepreneurship important? According to Wil Yu, Special Assistant for Innovation at the ONC, “the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC) is directly supporting innovation in health IT to accelerate the nation’s progress toward a 1 of 2 high-performing, adaptive health care system.” Scott Case, CEO of the Obama administration’s new StartUp America Partnership, agreed, noting that “driving American entrepreneurship is critical to creating jobs and sustaining our nation’s global leadership.” The eHealth Innovations Series/New England Summit is in line with and supports the objectives of the Office of the ONC, its programs and initiatives, including the StartUp America Partnership, announced by the White House in February which seeks to encourage investments in new technologies and businesses through efforts such as the creation of Innovation Exchanges.
