Artists Wanted for Long Island Festival & Walk for Mental Health Poster Contest

Cold Spring Harbor, NY (PRWEB) July 29, 2006

The Long Island Festival & Walk For Mental Health, a 501 (c) 3 nonprofit organization, is calling for all artists and members of the community to submit artwork for a poster to be used for marketing and advertising of the Long Island Festival and Walk for Mental Health for 2007 and in upcoming years. The winning poster will be announced at this year’s event, which is scheduled to take place on Sunday, September 17, 2006. Each year, thousands of walkers throughout Long Island gather in Huntington Village to raise awareness and remove the stigma associated with mental illness. Walkers begin on Gerard Street, near the Huntington Post Office, at 12:30pm and proceed to Huntington’s Heckscher Park. The day offers a presentation of talents from the Long Island and mental health communities, as well as many other attractions and activities.

“The LI Festival & Walk For Mental Health counters the significant barrier that discourages individuals with mental illnesses and their families from getting the help they need because they fear being discriminated against,” explains M.J. Pulling, a “Walk” committee member and Director of Development for the Pederson-Krag Center. The event replaces common misconceptions and misinformation with understanding and knowledge. This is a critical issue because one in five people nationwide are affected by mental illness in some way. The Walk For Mental Health is committed to making an impact and raising awareness among communities so that those seeking help and guidance will feel comfortable doing so.

All community members are invited to submit artwork to be considered for the poster contest. All artwork submissions must be on oak tag or poster board, size 24 x 36, and can be created in pen and ink, crayon, tempera, acrylic, or colored pencil. The theme for the poster must be related to Mental Health and Mental Wellness topics (for example what we can do to keep our minds healthy, how we can promote tolerance and acceptance of those who have a mental illness, how we can help break the stigma of mental illness, or how to promote mental wellness within your town). The artist of the winning poster will receive $ 50 and must agree to allow his or her poster to become the marketing poster for the LI Festival & Walk For Mental Health in 2007 and during upcoming years.

All artwork must be submitted by September 1st to the Family Service League building, 790 Park Avenue, Huntington, New York 11743 attention to Terry Mecke, Art Therapist. The artist’s name, address, and phone number must be attached to the back of the artwork. The artwork will be judged and the winner will be announced at the Long Island Festival & Walk For Mental Health. For more information, call Terry Mecke at 631-427-3700 ext. 292.
